The Digital Independence (DIDay) is an initiative that was started in 2025 during the 39. Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg. The ever increasing digital infrastructure is in the hand of fewer large tech companies, who determine how people inform themselves, communicate and organise online. DIDay is criticising that this could endanger democratic processes. DIDay does not understand itself as a purist project, but as "relaxed revolution": The point is to make a small, practical change in your daily life each month—not to give up Big Tech products completely and immediately.
I am a physicist by trade, researching the near Earth space environment. I recently started to be more active in the area of digitization and its effects on our society. Not so long ago, the Digital Independence Day (DID) initiative was brought to live, helping people exploring alternatives to Big Tech. I want to bring this initiative to Czech Republic and connect to the community, that is already doing the same effort, here.
